Instructions for measuring the window

The success of any window or door replacement project depends heavily on the actual measurement of the building opening and therefore determining the correct manufacturing dimensions of the windows and doors. There is no need to be afraid of the measuring process, but it is good to approach the measurement responsibly, calmly and sensibly. It is not for nothing that our ancestors used to say, measure twice and cut once. We even measure three times to be on the safe side.

What will you need for the measurement?

Prepare a tape measure, paper and pencil.

Measuring

Ideally, measure a clean building opening, without the original window. However, this is sometimes not possible, so be careful not to measure the old window, but really try to get the best measure of the actual jambs (walls of the construction opening).

We recommend measuring "wall to wall" in three places horizontally - top, middle and bottom. And in three places vertically - again on both edges and in the middle.

To be sure, you can take this measurement on the inside of the hole as well as on the outside. In most cases, the outside measured dimension is smaller than the inside dimension (the gable narrows towards the outside of the dwelling). This procedure eliminates any errors if the opening is inaccurate and the walls converge in any way.

If the measured dimensions of the jamb are significantly larger on the inside than on the outside, the original window lining may be L-shaped.In these cases, when renovating an older building, the frame of the new window should be "hidden" behind the jamb and the mounting foam should not be visible from the outside. In this case, the manufacturing dimension is about 10-20mm larger than the external dimension of the lining (in the case of a castellated, mullioned window this can be 40-50mm).

From the three measurements taken (both height and width), choose the lowest measured number and work with these two dimensions next.

Determining the production dimension of the window, door

The production dimension is the net dimension of the outer frame and this is how windows and doors are entered into production.

First we have to decide whether sills will be installed under the window, whether internal or external sills. If so, then we must subtract 30mm from the measured height. The production height of the window is given WITHOUT the base (sill, transport) profile, which is 30mm high.

Subtract 20-30 mm from the smallest measured height value for the connection joint and 30 mm for the "sill profile" in the case of installation including sills.
In the case of aluminium threshold entrance doors, the width is measured in the same way, but there is no backing profile under the door, so "only" 10-15mm is subtracted from the height. Wooden windows are measured in the same way, where there is also no backing profile, just a milled groove for the sill.
Subtract 20-30mm from the smallest measured width for the connecting joint.
The values obtained are the production dimensions of your window or door.

The joining joint (the space between the window and the wall should be at least 10mm to allow for good application of the mounting foam - our carpenter's pencil, which you will receive as a gift with your order, has exactly this 10mm. :-)

Once you have the exact factory dimensions of your windows and doors, you can check our online shop www.windows-eshop.com where you can very easily find windows of the same or similar dimensions in stock. The advantage is that you can have these windows at your home the very next day and save a lot of time. In addition, we order windows on the eshop in large batches, so we can offer you a better price on these windows and save you not only time, but also money!
